Two Workshops Vest
Margaret Briggs

Guild: Central Virginia Fiberarts Guild
Content: Silk, Cotton
Techniques: Weaving, Sewing
Inspiration: Knowing that I planned to attend a Sewing with Handwovens workshop a few weeks later, I went to a Color & Weave workshop at the Campbell Folk School and challenged myself to weave enough yardage for a Daryl Lancaster Walking Vest. This meant at least five yards of fabric at least 32″ wide. And I wanted to weave something bright, colorful, textured, and fun. So I wove seven yards in five days start to finish. Then I took it two weeks later and chopped it all up.

Design:
The color & weave fabric is woven of 10/2 perle cotton, threaded straight 8, and woven rosepath on an 8 shaft Macomber. Some sections were woven with two colors/two shuttles, some with one. The most interesting part of the cloth, eventually used for the collar, was when I wove off the last two yards of warp by emptying all my sampling bobbins.
At the sewing workshop, the pattern was modified from the original to suit my height, to add pockets, and to add a shawl collar. I also used a hot pink silk habotai lining. The vest was sewn on an antique Singer Featherweight, and is constructed with Hong Kong seams, and lots of hand finishing.
